LSU softball secures victory over top-seeded Tennessee in SEC tournament quarterfinals.
LSU faced a marathon 14-inning battle against Alabama in the opening round of the SEC tournament on Wednesday. However, their encounter with top-seeded Tennessee Volunteers in Thursday’s quarterfinal proved to be a swifter affair, lasting just seven innings.
Despite a seven-hour weather delay, the Tigers emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over the defending tournament champions, securing their spot in the semifinals on Friday.
LSU took an early lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Ali Newland, though they missed opportunities to extend their advantage, leaving three runners on base. Taylor Pleasants provided some insurance with an RBI single in the fifth inning, giving the Tigers a two-run cushion.
Tennessee narrowed the gap in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, prompting LSU to make a pitching change. Sydney Berzon, who had been instrumental in the previous round’s victory, came in and managed to escape the inning unscathed.
Despite some tense moments, including stranding a runner in the sixth inning, Berzon held firm, and LSU found themselves just three outs away from eliminating the tournament’s top seed. They sealed the victory without conceding any further runs.
Next up, LSU will face the winner of the game between No. 4-seeded Arkansas and No. 5-seeded Missouri in the semifinals on Friday at 3 p.m. CT.
