John Butler leaves the Bills, and new quarterback and CB coaches are named
The Buffalo Bills have fired longtime secondary assistant John Butler and hired former New Orleans Saints assistant Ronald Curry as Josh Allen’s new quarterbacks coach.
Curry, 44, has spent the last eight seasons with the Saints, where he most recently served as the passing game coordinator and quarterback coach. Curry joins Sean McDermott’s Bills staff in place of Joe Brady, who left midway through the previous season to assume the position of offensive coordinator.
Butler’s departure will occur along with the defensive team’s coaching change. Butler worked with McDermott for six seasons, the last two of which he spent as coordinator of the defensive passing game and defensive backs.
Bobby Babich was elevated by the Bills last week from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator. After seven years with the Bills, Babich, 40, effectively elevated both defensive line coach Eric Washington and associate head coach Butler. Washington later parted ways with the Bills to join the Chicago Bears as their defensive coordinator.
Additionally, McDermott brought on two more assistant coaches. Jahmile Addae becomes the new cornerbacks coach on staff. His alma mater is University of Miami. Coach of defensive quality control is Christian Taylor. He is a graduate of William & Mary, McDermott’s alma mater, where he served as offensive coordinator.
When Brady was an offensive assistant in New Orleans in 2017 and 2018, he collaborated with Curry.
Last month, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, offensive line coach Doug Marrone (a former head coach of the Bills), and two other offensive assistants were fired by Saints head coach Dennis Allen, who completely reorganised his offensive coaching staff.
Klint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, is adding new personnel, including a quarterback coach. Curry reportedly received an offer to remain as the Saints’ wide receivers coach, according to multiple New Orleans media outlets. Rather, Curry gets to work with Allen and get back together with Brady.
Curry was a standout quarterback for the University of North Carolina, where he also held the record for most career passing yards. The Oakland Raiders selected him in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL draft and converted him to wide receiver. He caught 193 passes in his seven seasons as a Raider. In 2006, he caught 62 passes for 727 yards and one score, making it his finest year to date.
In 2010, Curry started his coaching career as a high school coach. In 2014, he joined the San Francisco 49ers as an offensive assistant. He began his career with the Saints in 2016 as an offensive assistant, serving as receivers coach from 2018 to 2020. He became the quarterback coach in 2021.
