Auburn University’s quarterback coach is longtime CFL player Kent Austin.
After working as the head coach’s special assistant the previous season, Auburn University has chosen Kent Austin as its quarterbacks coach.
In a statement, Austin said, “I am grateful for Coach Freeze’s trust in me to develop our quarterbacks at Auburn and feel very honoured and blessed to be given this new position.
During his ten-year CFL career, the sixty-year-old quarterback played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, B.C. Lions, Toronto Argonauts, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He threw for 36,030 yards and two Grey Cups.
In 2003, he was hired by the Ottawa Renegades as their quarterbacks coach, where he received his first coaching position. Before taking over as head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2007, he worked as the Argonauts’ offensive coordinator from 2004 to 2006.
In his only season with the organisation, Austin guided the Riders to a Grey Cup, but he soon left to take a position as offensive coordinator at his old mater, Ole Miss, in the collegiate ranks. Before taking on the position of head coach at Cornell University, where he spent three seasons, he spent two years with the club.
The Natick, Massachusetts native spent five years as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ head coach after being hired in 2013. He then resigned to concentrate on his responsibilities as vice president of football operations. Although he contributed to the team’s two Grey Cup appearances, he ended his career with a 36-44 losing record.
In 2019, Austin joined Liberty University as the quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator. Under head coach Hugh Freeze, who is currently employed by Auburn, he served in these capacities for four seasons.
“I’ve worked with Kent at several schools and have known him for a long time,” Freeze remarked. “He has been an invaluable asset to our programme this past year and is an excellent teacher and quarterback development specialist.”
