Cowboys quarterback depth chart: Trey Lance and Dak Prescott’s roles in Dallas’ passing room in 2023 and beyond

Even though Dak Prescott is unquestionably the team’s starting quarterback, Jerry Jones’ boys found the decision to be peculiar. Due to injuries and being well down the depth chart, Lance, who was viewed as somewhat of a developing project coming out of college, never saw any playing time with the 49ers.

When the 2023 Cowboys season begins, he probably won’t be able to alter that final statement. Prescott is the undisputed quarterback, so Lance won’t have much leeway in the hierarchy until something really goes wrong.

2022 stats: 8-4 record, 12 games (12 starts), 2,860 yards, 23 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and a 91.1 passing rating.

We are aware of Dak Prescott’s identity and potential as a quarterback for the upcoming season, but we are unsure of his future beyond 2023.

As Prescott is in the third year of his contract, if nothing else, a revision to the agreement will likely be in the works. Prescott will currently take a pay hit from the Cowboys in 2024, with a salary of a whopping $59,455,000. Prescott will be responsible for $61,915,000 in dead money if he is removed.

All of this suggests that Prescott won’t be leaving for the 2024 campaign. Trey Lance does not have to apply.

Jerry Jones would be wise to fire both the coach and the quarterback simultaneously and start the process over, even if things might get heated if the Cowboys perform poorly or miss the playoffs this year. After the 2023 season, we’ll see if that’s the plan or if both players decide to spend additional time in Dallas.

2022 stats: 1,051 passing yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions, 4-1 record, nine games (five starts), 80.0 quarterback rating, and 58 percent completion percentage.

While Dak Prescott was sidelined in 2022 due to a thumb injury, Rush satisfactorily filled in, going 4-10 with five touchdowns during that time. Even though it may have been eliminated from the NFC East race from the outset, the squad went 4-1 and managed to stay afloat.

Rush is not going to be “The Guy” in Dallas going forward, but he is a good backup who has seen a lot of action since joining the Cowboys in 2017. Prior to the 2023 season, he re-signed with Dallas on a two-year contract. However, if the Cowboys are pleased with Lance’s performance in the meeting rooms and on the practice field, they may let Rush go for a cheap price.
