Giants’ Daniel Jones to miss rest of season with ACL tear: What are New York’s options at QB?
With quarterback Daniel Jones tearing his ACL during Sunday’s 30-6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, coach Brian Daboll said on Monday that Jones will miss the remainder of the season, making the already awful New York Giants season even worse. What you should know is as follows:
After being sacked by Raiders’ Maxx Crosby in the second quarter, Jones took a while to stand up. He was still in the game, but on the following play, he went down unharmed and hobbled over to the sidelines. Jones was absent from the second half.
After sustaining a neck injury during New York’s Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins, Jones played in his first game back on Sunday.
Tyrod Taylor, the Giants’ backup quarterback, is also sidelined due to a rib injury.
New York’s QB choices
The Giants added quarterback Matt Barkley to the practice squad last week since Taylor was placed on injured reserve and would not be able to return until at least after the bye week. However, he was not added to the active roster for the game on Sunday. Tommy DeVito was left as the only backup choice. He threw two interceptions, and once Jones left the game, the offence was unable to muster any momentum. Regarding the position group’s immediate future, Daboll stated he will meet with general manager Joe Schoen to talk about the options.
Since Jones is out for the long run, there is a lot to consider with this offence, and things will need to change. Complicating matters further, the Giants may be able to evaluate their quarterback issue in the future with a high 2024 draft pick, depending on how things work out.
When asked about the future of the quarterback position for the Giants, Daboll stated that his main priority is preparing Barkley and DeVito. Daboll responded, “My focus is on just being there for the young man and I know he’ll do everything he can do to get back, get ready to play,” in response to a question regarding Jones’ extensive injury history.
When Saquon Barkley questioned Jones, according to FOX’s sideline reporter Laura Okmin, he responded, “I don’t know, it just buckled.”
When he went down, the Giants were just getting acclimated to having their starter back, along with healthy offensive lineman Evan Neal and Andrew Thomas. Sunday’s game was going to be a huge test for the quarterback on how he could help right the ship, given the 2-6 start and Jones’ three-game absence.
