A quick glance at Alabama ahead of Rose Bowl vs. Michigan
It appeared for much of the 2023 season that the Alabama Crimson Tide would miss out on the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Following a defeat against Texas 34–24 in September, Alabama fell all the way to No. 10 in the AP Top 25 rankings. Fortunately, Alabama embarked on an 11-game winning streak and improved as the season progressed. They now hold the No. 4 ranking in the country (12-1) and will play the No. 1 Michigan Wolverines (13-0) in the Rose Bowl.
No. 49 in running offence (172.69), No. 61 in passing offence (228.5), No. 19 in scoring offence (35.1 points per game), and No. 54 in total offence (401.2 yards per game).
A player that made significant progress all year long was Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe. With a passer rating of 177.48, Milroe was fourth in the country this season. He completed 65 percent of his attempts for 2,718 yards and 23 touchdowns with six interceptions. Milroe was also quite effective on the ground, with 468 yards and 12 running touchdowns.
Running back is one of Alabama’s two strong suits. Roydell Williams has 561 running yards and six total touchdowns, while Jase McClellan has 803 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
Although Alabama’s wide receiving statistics aren’t as impressive as they have been in previous years, they do have two receivers and one tight end who have all proven to be reliable this season. Isaiah Bond, a wide receiver, has 44 catches for 621 yards and four touchdowns, TE Amari Niblack has 19 catches for 231 yards and four scores, and wide receiver Jermaine Burton has 35 catches for 777 yards and eight touchdowns.
Alabama is ranked No. 17 in scoring defence (18.4 points per game), No. 32 in rushing defence (124.54), No. 23 in passing defence (188.8), and No. 18 in total defence (313.3 yards allowed per game).
Dallas Turner, an edge rusher, won the SEC Defensive Player of the Year award. This season, Turner has racked up nine sacks, 13.5 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles.
Terrion Arnold, a cornerback, is Alabama’s top interceptor with five.
Following a season in which he recorded 99 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and one forced fumble, true freshman cornerback Caleb Downs was awarded the SEC Newcomer of the Year. Downs can return punts as well; against Chattanooga, he scored on an 85-yard return.
Jiihad Campbell, a linebacker, has an interception, 11 pressures, and 65 tackles.
In November, Jalen Milroe’s performance against Auburn preserved Alabama’s postseason dreams. With 43 seconds remaining in the game and behind 24-20, Alabama faced a 4th and Goal scenario, starting from the 31-yard line. With plenty of time on his hands, Milroe found Isaiah Bond for a touchdown pass. The game would be won by Alabama, 27–24.
