The Detroit Lions’ five-point plan for winning the postseason
ALLEN PARK — The postseason is almost here for the Detroit Lions. If Seattle loses to Philadelphia
on Monday Night Football, they might punch their ticket as early as tonight. If they win in any of the next three regular-season games, they’ll get home-field advantage in the playoffs.
However, they have stated since the conclusion of the previous season that they aim for more than merely qualifying for the postseason. They anticipate causing some trouble once they’re there since they think they’re a dangerous matchup for anyone.
Although the Lions are too flawed to be a serious Super Bowl favourite, they are a formidable opponent for any team when they are playing their style of football. Here are the top five factors to consider in order to guarantee a postseason spot in January:
Starting quickly: This season, the Lions have performed worst when trailing. They are just 1-4 in those kinds of games overall. They had double-digit deficits in each of their four losses. Furthermore, it’s not difficult to determine why. At their finest, they are going into short-yardage
situations, playing ahead of the sticks, and letting Ben Johnson cook while riding David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs behind that potent offensive line. They’ve rolled to a 7-0 record in games like that, where they’ve grabbed double-digit leads, with only the Chargers game being particularly tight.
When playing from ahead rather than behind, Detroit appears to be a completely different squad, allowing it to showcase its greatest assets and maintain rhythm.
“Both on offence and defence, when we’re getting those chunk runs, you’re getting five, six, or eight yards a pop early on, and our defence is getting these, okay, so now that they’re in second-and-10 or second-and-8, you just kind of feel like, okay, this is it. We should play games like this because they are enjoyable and fulfilling. Here, third downs are controlled and lengthier on defence. It’s just that, in my opinion, that you get a really positive vibe when it occurs frequently and early.
Prime-time babies: This team’s incredible resilience under duress is one of its most intriguing traits. These Lions, who are among the five youngest teams in the league and are vying for their first division title since before the majority of the roster was born, play their best football in those exact moments. Young teams that are winning for the first time often struggle with the increased stakes and spotlight that comes with it. They have won five straight games dating back to last season, and they are 4-0 in prime time this year. They have also won six straight games by a total score of 202-89, and even in their losses, they have always bounced back the next week. That’s an average victory margin of 18.8, guys.
“Our superpower is how we respond, and it starts with Dan (Campbell) and goes to me and through the offense and the coordinators and the coaches, everybody,” Goff said. “Our superpower is how
we respond as a team, as a unit, as a group. We’ve been through a lot of adversity.”
There’s nothing quite like playoff football, and this roster is stocked with 51 players who have never played a postseason snap in this town. There’s no telling how they’ll respond to the challenge. But if it’s anything resembling how they’ve responded to the biggest challenges and toughest corners and highest stakes in the regular season, they might be all right. Especially if they clinch home-field advantage, where it was so loud on Saturday night that players were having trouble hearing plays being blown dead, much less getting off a play.
