NFL absolves Bengals of wrongdoing following investigation into Joe Burrow injury
SUMMARY Following an NFL investigation, which was reported by multiple outlets citing anonymous sources, the Bengals were found not to have violated the league’s injury report policy when they failed to include quarterback Joe Burrow on the report prior to a game on November 16 in which he sustained a season-ending injury.
Burrow’s right arm was seen in a since-deleted Instagram post wearing a soft cast, which led many to believe he may have been hurt before the Bengals’ November game against the Baltimore Ravens.
But the Bengals failed to include him on the injury report, which is a must if he was hurt.
Burrow tore a ligament in his wrist during the game while throwing a touchdown pass, even though he did not make contact with another player. This led some to speculate that Burrow had an injury prior to the game that got worse.
Burrow, as quoted by the Associated Press, described the ligament tear as “a completely new injury” and said, “It’s not uncommon for guys to wear compression sleeves on planes because when you go up to that altitude, you know, things can swell up.” The Bengals and Burrow refuted reports that he was injured prior to the game.
The NFL concluded the team was in compliance with its policy after looking over the team’s medical records, observing practice footage, and speaking with Burrow and pertinent medical staff, a league source told CBS Sports, which broke the story first.
The Bengals are 1-1 following Burrow’s injury and 6-6 overall this season. Burrow has been replaced at quarterback by Jake Browning of the Bengals. The Bengals are currently trailing the Ravens (9-3), Cleveland Browns (7-5) and Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6), in the AFC North.
Cincinnati — Before Joe Burrow hurt his wrist in the Bengals’ game against the Baltimore Ravens on November 16, the NFL determined that the team had complied with all injury report procedures.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network insiderdom initially reported that no infractions were discovered.
According to Pelissero, the NFL examined Burrow’s medical records, studied practice footage, and spoke with pertinent medical professionals.
Following the game, Burrow suffered a right wrist ligament tear, which prompted the league to open an investigation. They investigated whether Burrow ought to have been added to the injury report prior to the match.
Burrow claimed to have “felt it pop” as he was passing to Joe Mixon for a touchdown. As soon as he left the pitch, he went to the blue medical tent because he could clearly feel pain. He tried to toss the ball when he got back to the sideline, but he was unsuccessful.
Social media was abuzz about the injury, especially after a video that appeared to show Burrow wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm before the game was removed from the Bengals’ accounts. Burrow was seen briefly getting off in the video.
