Transfer Whispers: Warriors’ barrier in pursuit of Broncos gun as veteran’s rage

Cameron George, the Warriors’ chief executive, has admitted that his club is not sure of re-signing Broncos veteran Kurt Capewell for the 2024 season.

The 30-year-old has only one season left on his contract in Brisbane and has reportedly been advised that he will not be extended beyond 2024.

The Warriors have been lobbying for Capewell’s immediate release and have reportedly tabled a three-year deal, with George admitting he’s “not confident” he’ll be able to retain his services in 2024.

“The option is there if him and his Brisbane want to look at those, it’s up to him, where he’s at with his longer-term future, we’ve certainly expressed our interest,” George said in an interview with SEN.

“He’s got a year left with the Broncos, and they need to talk about it.”

“If he wants to come and talk to us about this year we’re certainly willing to but we respect the fact that he has a contract with Brisbane.”

He also claimed that the Warriors’ offer for the 2025 season and beyond was still on the table, despite growing dissatisfaction at Red Hill.

“We’ve (offered) a longer-term option here for him, he’s on the market for 2025 and that’s what we’re looking at,” George was quoted as saying.

“If that happens and he and Brisbane decide that there is an option for us to discuss this year, we’d be happy to do that.”

According to WWOS, Capewell’s early departure has enraged a group of senior players who believe the former Panther was crucial to their finals run in 2023.

Kevin Walters’ team came perilously close to winning the championship before superstar halfback Nathan Cleary provided a second-half masterclass.

Senior figures say his calm demeanor and experience contributed significantly to the Broncos’ triumph.

As a result, they were surprised that club executives were considering releasing him for the 2024 season.
