After spending time in England with his old buddy and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, Brisbane coach Kevin Walters is back full of energy and eager to get his team back to NRL success.
Walters visited the London home of a Premier League club before going to the Los Angeles Rams’ NFL headquarters.
“It was a personal development tour where I went to see how other organisations work, their set-ups, coaching structures and sharing information around everything to do with our games,” Walters stated to AAP.
Postecoglou shared the Broncos’ motto of being “hungry and humble” in their pursuit of victory, according to Walters.
Coaches of glamour clubs are both males. Despite having a long history, Tottenham has not won the English premier league in almost 60 years. As of right now, the team is fifth in the Premier League in Postecoglou’s first season as manager.
After playing for Brisbane for five premierships, Walters is determined to break the team’s current 18-year title drought.
Ange has excellent operating skills. The main thing that strikes me about him is definitely his demeanour, as he does things with humility,” Walters stated.
“Ange does not take Tottenham’s status as one of the biggest Premier League clubs for granted.
“He is working as hard as he has ever worked he tells me which is refreshing for us to hear because we are all working hard to get where we want to go too.”
With the two clubs under intense scrutiny and receiving more media attention than others, both coaches are under tremendous pressure. We don’t accept failure.
Although I talked to Ange about it as well, there are some expectations on our teams,” Walters stated.
He is undoubtedly realistic and aware that mechanisms must be put in place in order for them to eventually pay off.
“He is new but very confident in the staff and roster that he has in place that he can do very well, as are we.”
There was more to the catch-up than just business.
“It was good to share the old friendship because we got together when I was at the Melbourne Storm (as assistant coach) and Ange was coaching Melbourne Victory,” Walters stated.
