As the team prepares to resume the season, City SC ties Atlanta 3-3 in scrimmage following yet another rain delay.
St. Louis City SC had to contend with the weather even during a scrimmage.
When City SC and Atlanta United finally took to the pitch on Saturday for their midseason tune-up, it was delayed by forty-five minutes due to storms in the Atlanta area. The 120-minute match ended in a 3-3 draw as both teams adjusted to life after the Leagues Cup break.
Bradley Carnell, the coach of City SC, said, “This time the weather gods stayed true to what the radar was saying and it blew over.” Overall, it wasn’t too bad, and the boys did really well on the test. That trip was well worth it, in my opinion.
“We had moments of fatigue, we had moments of brilliance, we saw it all today congested in a 120-minute game.”
City SC started practising on Monday after not playing since losing 4-0 to Club America in the Leagues Cup on July 27. Carnell was hoping for a chance to iron out some kinks for his team before returning to action, as was Atlanta, which also failed to advance out of group play in the Leagues Cup. MLS play resumes on August 20, with City SC hosting Austin at CityPark.
As far as practise and preparation go for the Austin game and other games that follow, I think it was a really good exercise for us to try out and see players like Anthony Markanich starting off the game, to see how he does in our system. We were up against a really good technical team’, Carnell said. We made a few tactical adjustments after observing some really excellent things. We told the boys that although we could have played on a college team and gained some experience, we wouldn’t have really benefited from it. We were up against a very skilled team. Given that four of our first six games are away from home, we should be tough to play against.
Adeniran, Tomas Ostrak, and Nicholas Gioacchini scored for City SC, which fell behind 2-0 and 3-1 in the game’s four half-hour halves before coming back to draw even. The outside backs rotated every 40 minutes, with the starters playing for 70 minutes and the backups for 50. With 35 points, Atlanta is ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference. With 41 points, City SC is first in the Western Conference.
