An injury to Trevor Lawrence causes him to go down against the Bengals.
Trevor Lawrence, a former quarterback for Clemson, has guided the Jacksonville Jaguars to an 8-4 record. Regretfully, Lawrence—the former first overall pick—was injured during his team’s Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals. With just under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the score tied at 28, Lawrence was attempting to make a huge third down throw. Trey Hendrickson, the edge rusher for the Bengals, made a bull rush up the field, and as he fell back, he was unintentionally stepped on by his own offensive lineman. Lawrence made an attempt to stand, but he instantly collapsed back down, obviously frustrated and in pain. Even the opponent, Hendrickson, paused to pray for Lawrence on his knees as it
But there is good news. The quarterback reportedly only has a high ankle sprain, which can be quite crippling, but it doesn’t seem like Lawrence’s season will end as a result of this injury, according to reports on Tuesday. It’s unclear how he will feel going into this week’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately, Jacksonville’s season ended in overtime as they lost to the Bengals despite the absence of their star player, dropping them to 8-4 overall. This Sunday, they’ll have to travel to Cleveland and proceed with backup CJ Beathard as the probable starter.
The 4-8 Jets’ offensive problems aren’t solely the result of their backup quarterbacks. Much further up the team’s food chain is general manager Joe Douglas, who is ultimately in charge of the QB situation and the rest of the roster.
Given the current state of chaos surrounding New York’s quarterback situation, Douglas should be chastised for not acquiring a reliable backup quarterback to Aaron Rodgers. Backup quarterbacks Jake Browning (Bengals), Joe Flacco (Browns), Gardner Minshew (Colts), and C.J. Beathard (Jaguars) all performed admirably in Week 13 alone, combining to complete 90 out of 133 (68%) passes for 983 yards and six touchdowns (while only one interception)
.
Meanwhile, without Rodgers—who suffered an Achilles injury four snaps into the season—New York’s quarterback carousel keeps turning. In the third quarter of a 32-6 rout against the Buffalo Bills on November 19, New York benched first-round pick Zach Wilson and gave veteran Tim Boyle command of the offence. However, Wilson’s two starts in relief did not go much better for the 29-year-old, who was eventually benched in favour of Trevor Siemian during a Week 13 loss to the Falcons.
