Liverpool and Aston Villa have gained a significant advantage in their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, with Barcelona reportedly dropping out of the race.
The 21-year-old was in impressive form for Bilbao last season, notching nine goals and six assists in 43 games, which drew the attention of several top clubs.
His goal contributions helped the Spanish club reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals, where they were defeated by Osasuna, and the club finished eighth in La Liga.
Williams’ form has improved in recent weeks after a slow start to the season. In his last five appearances, he has two goals and three assists, contributing to Bilbao’s 11-point haul.
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool and Aston Villa are both big fans of Williams and are considering signing him in January.
Barcelona has also had the youngster on their radar for some time, but it now appears that they will withdraw from the race.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has decided not to pursue Williams this winter.
After months of transfer rumors and speculation about his future, the Spain international signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2027 on Friday.
All new LaLiga contracts include a release clause, which Bilbao has set at a surprisingly low €50 million (£42.9 million), making it affordable for many of Williams’ admirers.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has ‘no intention of activating the attacker’s new release clause,’ and their ‘volatile financial situation is partially to blame.’
Williams is said to have a close relationship with several Barcelona players, but the LaLiga champions simply cannot afford to bring him in.
This opens the door for Liverpool and Aston Villa to sign Williams in January, who is looking to join a European club.
It remains to be seen whether the Premier League duo are willing to match his new €50 million release clause.
