Micky Mellon’s dismissal has Tranmere Rovers considering three unemployed coaches.

The League Two table currently has Tranmere Rovers in 14th place at the time of their decision. With nine games remaining, they are separated by 11 points from the play-offs, suggesting that another season of fourth-tier football may be in store.

Mellon’s second stint at Prenton Park is coming to an end with this decision, but despite his legendary status at Rovers, it seems like the right one following a challenging season.

Now that the focus is on his replacement, we’d like to suggest three potential bosses for your consideration.

David Artell
In terms of practical moves for a coach who is available, Artell might be a perfect fit. At Crewe Alexandra, he developed and managed a generation of players, leading them from League Two to League One while emphasising player development.

Although his managerial abilities might make him an extremely effective hire, it is unclear if they will view him as the leader who can lead them back to League One.

Cowley, Danny
Cowley would undoubtedly be a prominent, aspirational appointment. If he were to also drop to League Two, that would be shocking, but

He’s got promotion experience and pedigree in higher divisions, but again, this would be a really ambitious move for Rovers.

Graham Alexander

Alexander, 51, left Motherwell at the end of last season and has been out of work since. He’s got bags of EFL experience after spells in charge of Fleetwood Town, Scunthorpe United and Salford City and could be eager for another go on these shores after his time in Scotland.

He’s got promotions under his belt with both Fleetwood and Salford, rising to League One via the play-offs with the Cod Army.
