MANAGER Russell Martin praised the role of replacements in Saints’ current unbeaten run, saying their performances make his job “easier.”

Ryan Fraser came off the bench to score a late winner against Hull City before firing the corner that contributed to Southampton’s last-gasp equalizer against Preston a few days later.

After coming on in the second half against Birmingham on Saturday, the Scot was once again important.

He sent in the cross, which was cleared by fellow replacement Sam Edozie, allowing Adam Armstrong to blast in his eighth goal of the season.

Martin told the Daily Echo after Southampton’s 2-1 win over Birmingham that achieving their aims this season will require every member of the squad.

“I think it makes my job easier to know you can bring people on from the bench to impact the game,” he said.

“The subs have made the team stronger in every game recently, which is all you can ask for.” It’s about time to play some folks or adjust things if other players appear exhausted.

“That’s the balancing act. The players are all aware that they are being looked after, and they are all aware of the details. I’m happy for the players who have come off the bench and made an impact.”

Southampton have used 23 different players in the Championship this season, which is tied for the second-lowest total in the league.

Saints may be forced to leave more crucial players on the bench as Jack Stephens and Ross Stewart work their way back to full fitness.

“We said at the beginning of the week that we were going to need everyone, and I think we have used everyone pretty much,” Martin says.

“When Joe Aribo came on today, I thought he was brilliant.” He’s been so frustrated, yet I always use him as an example.

“The squad isn’t large, but it’s loaded with talent. We must be able to rely on them as and when we require them. The squad, not just the team on the field, has triumphed today.

“Some have found it difficult because the team has been consistent, but look at how James Bree has performed.” He was fantastic, and I’m very proud of Breezy.

“It will take everyone to get where we want to go.” We’ve put ourselves in a good position, but it’s not enough, and we need to keep pushing them.”

“He is a fantastic teammate; he understands his role, and I am very pleased with him.” Wee Man (Ryan Fraser) has had an impact in every game in which he has appeared. Sam Edozie performed admirably today.
