The offensive coordinator for FSU football is being considered for the head coaching position in Washington.
The coaching changes that have occurred this offseason have already given the Florida State Seminoles faithful quite a scare. Mike Norvell was included in the pool of candidates to take Nick Saban’s place as the famous head coach of Alabama once he decided to retire.
The Seminoles signed Norvell to a new eight-year contract worth over $10 million annually in reaction to the rumours.
Despite the fact that Florida State was notably left out of the College Football Playoffs, the head coach of the Seminoles is still receiving a reward for his efforts, as the team finished the season 13-0, won the ACC Championship, and shown that it is returning to the pinnacle of the sport.
Although Norvell is not going to be the head coach in Tuscaloosa, Kalen Deboer, the head coach of Washington, accepted the position after guiding his team to both the College Football Playoff and the National Championship game.
Due to the domino effect, Washington is currently without a head coach. It is not easy to find a big-name hire in mid-January when classes have resumed and exercises have resumed.
Alex Atkins, the offensive coordinator at Florida State, was mentioned by Chris Vannini of The Athletic as a potential candidate to join the Huskies coaching staff. Among others, he mentioned the names of Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell, Kansas head coach Lance Leipold, Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch, Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski, and others.
“As the offensive line and associate head coach at Tulane from 2006 to 2008, Florida State offensive coordinator Alex Atkins is acquainted with Dannen. He is still getting better, and he was crucial to Florida State’s comeback and 13-0 start to the season. He took over one of the weakest offensive lines in the Power 5 at FSU and improved it into a strong unit. In 2022, he took on coordinator responsibilities as well, according to Vannini.
However, Atkins has been in the headlines this week on multiple occasions. Recently, he drove a recruit to a NIL meeting and was imposed a show-cause penalty. Of course, this could affect his perception as a potential head coach, but his record at Florida State is still very strong.
