
Adam Johnson: Nottingham Panthers player dies after ‘freak accident’ in ice hockey match against Sheffield Steelers
The Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers game was halted so that Adam Johnson could receive treatment on the ice before being sent to the hospital; spectators at the Sheffield Arena were asked to leave; On Sunday, the Elite Ice Hockey League cancelled all of its games.
Adam Johnson, an ice hockey player, passed away in the hospital on Saturday after “a freak accident” during a game.
According to reports, the 29-year-old American player at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena had a sliced throat during the second session of play.
Players formed a ring around Johnson as medical attention was given on the ice, and protective screens were erected after the game was halted. Before the 8,000-person crowd left Sheffield Arena, the players went back to their locker rooms.
Johnson was brought to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, but there was no chance of recovery.
Panthers statement: “After a strange incident during last night’s game in Sheffield, Adam Johnson unfortunately passed suddenly, and the Nottingham Panthers are really devastated to announce this.
In addition to being a superb ice hockey player, Adam, our number 47, was also a fantastic teammate and an amazing person with his entire life ahead of him.
“During this incredibly trying time, the Panthers would like to extend our sympathies and thoughts to Adam’s partner, family, and all of his friends.
“Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing.”
All of Sunday’s Elite Ice Hockey League games were postponed in the wake of the unfortunate occurrence.
“The Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson sadly passed away following a freak accident in Saturday’s game between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers,” the Elite Ice Hockey League said in a statement.
Everyone associated with the EIHL sends their deepest sympathies to Adam’s family, friends, and teammates during this deeply sad and trying time. Additionally, we would ask that everyone respect Adam’s family’s privacy at this time.”
The Elite Ice Hockey Association’s chair, Barrie Archer, expressed shock and sadness on behalf of the entire organisation at Adam’s death. This is a horrible accident, and during this trying time, our thoughts and prayers are with Adam’s family, friends, and the ice hockey family.”
Before their match against Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday observed a minute of silence at Hillsborough on Sunday.

In order to compete in the Elite Ice Hockey League, which features teams all around Great Britain, Johnson joined the Panthers this summer.
of 13 games throughout the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons, Johnson scored a goal and four points while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.
He also played for the Augsburger Panther of Germany, the Ontario Reign of Canada, and the Malmo Redhawks of Sweden.
