Ohio State News: Kyle McCord, a transfer quarterback, defeats rival Nebraska

College football’s transfer season is already underway and rapidly intensifying. Kyle McCord, a quarterback transfer from Ohio State, appears not to be attending Nebraska at this time.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, McCord left the campus of league opponent Nebraska Cornhuskers and will continue his recruiting hunt for other universities.

McCord is referred to as “one of the most prominent players in the transfer portal for multiple reasons” by Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report.

Polacek draws attention to the fact that McCord was competent enough to earn a starting position at a prestigious university like Ohio State, which is not something that happens very often.

Prior to finally choosing against Nebraska, the former Buckeye paid a visit to the university on Monday, December 11. Cornhusker supporters may be offended by this for a while.

“Over the weekend, Nebraska was trending toward being the favorite for the Ohio State transfer,” Nakos said. “It’s a turn of events for Nebraska.” McCord will now look to other colleges in need of a quarterback.

According to Bleacher Report’s Scott Polacek, McCord is “one of the most prominent players in the transfer portal for multiple reasons”.

The fact that McCord was skilled enough to secure a starting spot at an esteemed university like Ohio State—something that doesn’t happen very often—is highlighted by Polacek.

On Monday, December 11, the former Buckeye visited the campus before ultimately deciding against Nebraska. This may offend Cornhusker supporters for a while.

With J.J. McCarthy as their quarterback, the rival Wolverines advanced to the College Football Playoffs by defeating Ohio State in their last regular-season game. They might seek to McCord to take McCarthy’s place as he is expected to declare for the NFL draft

McCord enrolled at Ohio State in 2021 as a 5-star recruit. In 2021 and 2022, he served as C.J. Stroud’s backup quarterback for the Houston Texans.

Having defeated Devon Brown, he was given the keys to the program for the 2023 season. According to Nakos, “the quarterback’s early December 4th free agency announcement stunned the majority of the college football community.”

With just six interceptions in his 3,170 yards of passing play and 24 touchdowns, McCord guided the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record. Although those seem like great figures that many would be satisfied with, Buckeye supporters did not seem to think they were good enough.

For the majority of the season, McCord was criticized by the fans. One loss was all it took to reach its peak.

After losing to rival Michigan, McCord and the Buckeyes were able to avoid missing out on the College Football Playoff and the Big 10 Championship game. The opposition Wolverines had lost to them three times in a row.

Against the rival Wolverines, McCord completed 18 of 30 passes for 271 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. On the last drive, while Ohio State was trying to pull off a stunning comeback, one of the interceptions occurred.

“His season can now be viewed as a big-picture disappointment, which is a testament to just how high the bar is at Ohio State,” Polacek wrote.

In the Cotton Bowl game against Missouri, the Buckeyes will rely on sophomore Brown in McCord’s absence. Brown was a 4-star recruit in the 2022 class when he committed to the Buckeyes.

Prior to the 2023 season, Brown had the opportunity to secure the starting position, but McCord eventually defeated him. He will now have the opportunity to demonstrate his talent to the nation and Ohio State supporters, proving that he deserves to start.
