CHICAGO, Ill. (AP) — With a right rib injury, the St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Harrison Bader on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday.
Bader was injured while diving for Nick Madrigal’s bloop double in the third inning of Monday night’s 5-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox. A CAT scan revealed a hairline fracture, according to manager Mike Shildt.
“Non-displaced fracture, so that’s a blessing, it turns out,” Shildt said in an interview. “How long will it be?” Unsure. Obviously, the ten days. We’re hoping it won’t be much longer than that. It all depends on how much soreness and discomfort you can get out of there. When that happens, things are likely to pick up pretty quickly.
Dylan Carlson started in centre on Tuesday. Lane Thomas started in left, but he could also play centre while Bader is out.
Tyler O’Neill, who is out with a fractured middle finger, could return to help the Cardinals. On May 16, the outfielder was injured while sliding into a base during a 5-3 loss to San Diego.
“We expect him to be back on this road trip at some point,” he said. “Not this series, but we would hope maybe next series, but definitely on the trip, unless he has a setback.”
In addition, the Cardinals recalled first baseman/outfielder John Nogowski from Triple-A Memphis. This season, Nogowski has gone 1 for 14 in 15 games with the Cardinals.
