Tennessee football: The top five reasons to fire the Vols Jeremy Pruitt right away
Let’s be sincere. This will not take place. The choice Phillip Fulmer made to appoint Jeremy Pruitt as Tennessee football’s head coach will always be associated with him as the UT athletic director. It will take substantial evidence to remove Pruitt from office as long as he is in charge.
A poor third season with numerous adjustments made because of the pandemic wouldn’t meet the requirements for overwhelming evidence. Considering that, the Vols will have to play this guy for at least another season after this one.
But is that the right choice? Is it time for Tennessee football to stop playing with Jeremy Pruitt? To be honest, there is a case to be made for that. The Vols’ top five reasons for firing head coach are as follows.
The year of the staff overhauls was also the year that Butch Jones and Derek Dooley lost their jobs. Numerous employees left for comparable or worse jobs elsewhere in both cases, which ought to have raised serious concerns. That’s an additional problem, considering the events surrounding Tennessee football during Pruitt’s two years in charge.
Two employees of the Vols left after 2018 because they accepted better positions. But given the situation Johnson was inheriting at FSU with Mike Norvell, they lost running backs coach David Johnson to the Florida State Seminoles this past offseason, which was a downgrade. Due to NFL position coaching responsibilities, they lost Chris Rumph and Kevin Sherrer.
Finally, Tracy Rocker’s position as defensive line coach was lost by Jeremy Pruitt. Well, Jimmy, Rocker’s successor,
Jimmy Brumbaugh, Rocker’s replacement, was fired four games into the season and seemed to be the victim of scapegoating following a 34-7 defeat to the Kentucky Wildcats.
The defensive linemen are now coached by Pruitt, but nothing has changed for the better. In Pruitt’s three years, nine coaches have left for various reasons, and only one of them received a promotion. The offensive line is the only position that still has its original coach from when he took over. That is a problem that has to be solved.
