Oilers Looking for D in the Trade Market Broberg Philip
It appears that the Edmonton Oilers are actively looking into trade possibilities for rookie defenseman Philip Broberg due to salary cap restrictions. Insider and ESPN commentator Kevin Weekes claims that general manager Ken Holland is peddling Broberg around. According to Weekes, the club might try to work out a dollar-for-dollar deal to keep within their means. Better still, if they can address a need in the process.
It seems like the Oilers lost out on this one in certain respects. Fans contend that the Oilers never really gave this blueliner, who has genuine promise, a fair chance. Though he hardly played, they frequently called him up. When he did, it was for a short time and in a restricted capacity. Edmonton may come to regret this choice if he receives the same opportunity from another team that the Oilers denied.It is clear that Broberg is a player with unrealized ability and promise. However, it seems sense that he won’t be getting much playing time given that he has to go past Darnell Nurse, Brett Kulak, and Mattias Ekholm. In the absence of an injury, Broberg had an uphill task. As a result, the return must significantly benefit the team in order for the transaction to be justified.
In a Broberg Trade, What Do the Oilers Want?
The Oilers are in a difficult situation as they actively search for goaltender alternatives while having little contract space available. With little room for financial manoeuvring and General Manager Ken Holland searching for a goalkeeper, Broberg gets traded in to help make the required adjustments. The team probably won’t be able to move Broberg’s $863K cap cost and still solve their issues, but he might be included in a larger deal or a move to free cap space in order to do something else in the end.
The Oilers might feel pressured to take advantage of the opportunity as soon as possible rather than delaying the choice. It could be time to find someone else to replace him if he won’t be playing this season. Even if a decision may hurt in the long run, if the appropriate trade is made, it will ultimately benefit in the short run. The results of this possible deal and if Broberg succeeds with another team in the future will only become clear with time.
Aside from an injury, the Oilers are beginning to settle into a groove, and Broberg doesn’t seem to be in the mix for the near future. Moving him can result in the addition of a rental player or someone with a unique perspective.
