The official trailer for LaKeith Stanfield’s upcoming biblical film “The Book of Clarence” has been released by Sony Pictures.
According to the official synopsis, Stanfield plays a “Streetwise but down-on-his-luck Clarence, who is struggling to find a better life for his family, while fighting to free himself of debt.” The project is the brainchild of Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall). “He risks everything to carve his own path to a divine life, drawn by the might and glory of
the rising Messiah and His apostles, only to realise that faith’s redeeming power might be his only hope.”
In addition to James McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch, Stanfield co-stars with Omar Sy, Anna Diop, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Michael Ward, Alfre Woodard, Teyana Taylor, Caleb McLaughlin, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
The new album “The Book of Clarence” includes songs by Kid Cudi, JAY-Z, Lil Wayne, Samuel, and others
I have long wanted to make the movie The Book of Clarence. The plot and the music for The Book of Clarence were constantly brewing in my head as I worked on The Harder They Fall and all my other projects’, Samuel said.
It was always clear that I would write and direct the film, compose the score, and write and perform on the soundtrack—it was all part of one incredible journey that relied on the other. However, I also collaborated with the most amazing musicians on our song “Hallelujah Heaven.” He said, “I loved getting Lil’ Wayne, Buju Banton, and Shabba Ranks all on the same track. Working with them was so dope.”
Samuel characterised Clarence as “a person that doesn’t believe in anything outside of what’s in front of him, what he can see and hear” in an interview with Vanity Fair.
“Clarence exudes a great deal of inner confidence and belief. This man is certain that he can soar. Though he doesn’t practise any outside religion, he reminds me of myself as a child. As the majority of people around him are talking about the Messiah, I think it’s just a really interesting vantage point to explore,” Samuel went on.
Clarence’s voyage was described by him as one “of self-belief and world discovery.”
The musician and filmmaker said, “I always wanted to explore the Bible stories, but from the perspective of the person who sells Jesus his sandals, the woman or man that owns the hair salon.”
On January 12, 2024, “The Book of Clarence” opens in theatres. Use the YouTube video above to view the most recent trailer.
