Despite having a difficult season overall, the Seattle Seahawks offence performed admirably on Thursday night against the Dallas Cowboys. I would like my chances of winning an upset if you told me ahead of time that they would score thirty-five points. That didn’t happen, partly due to another fourth-quarter deficit blown by the Seahawks defence.
The Seahawks have led going into the fourth quarter three times in the last four games. Even though none of those
leads exceeded nine points, they were still leads. They’ve all been blown away by Seattle’s defence, which also blew two leads in the Washington Commanders game.
Do you want to know how poor the Seahawks defence has performed in maintaining a lead during this disappointing stretch of November? These are the results of their fourth quarter drive from positions they won last month.
It’s not always the offence failing to move the ball; the Commanders scored twice and the Dallas field goal came after the Seahawks scored.
35 points in just 7 possessions is a terrible, terrible start. While there have undoubtedly been some heartbreaking penalties that have affected half of these scoring possessions, Seattle’s defence in the fourth quarter has been appalling throughout this losing streak. Although the defence performed admirably overall in that game, the Seahawks offence still had room to improve against the Rams, as they amassed over 400 yards against the Commanders and Cowboys, while the defence allowed 28 points in total in the fourth quarter.
Musty. Since the entire second half of the Baltimore Ravens game was essentially garbage time, I’m being kind and leaving it out.
Although giving up leads in the fourth quarter by a Seattle defence is nothing new, the defences from 2012 and 2015 finished first in points allowed, and advanced metrics rated the Seahawks as generally elite. The Seahawks defence this year is a terrible one that gets progressively worse as the game goes on. This group is too costly to be playing at this level, as I stated earlier in the week. When it will get better is a mystery to me.
