The forward Evander Kane was cut on his wrist by a skate blade during Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Edmonton Oilers placed him on long-term injured reserve on Wednesday and anticipate that he will be out for at least three months.

The graphic scene happened in the second period when Kane, having caught Lightning defenseman Philippe Myers, tumbled uncontrollably along the boards. Pat Maroon, a forward for Tampa Bay, skated toward the entangled players in an attempt to get the puck, and as he did so, his skate sliced the Oilers forward’s left forearm or wrist.
After being brought to a nearby hospital, Kane had a deep cut repaired. Kane posted a statement on social media on Wednesday morning, thanking them for the prompt and effective care he received. Although he did not provide a timetable for his comeback, Kane plans to get back on the ice as soon as he can.
Kane has played heavy minutes for the Oilers, while putting up five goals and eight assists over 13 games this season. He is in the first year of a four-year, $20.5-million contract he inked in the summer after joining Edmonton mid-season last year.
In the meantime, the Oilers recalled both Mattias Janmark and Klim Kostin from the AHL.
Kane posted on Twitter, saying, “I appreciate all of the well wishes and prayers I have received over the last few hours.” “Obviously, I had a really scary experience last night, and I’m still a little shocked.”
